There are several types of bronze alloys available on the market, appropriated for the manufacturing of parts for the most different sectors of industry, which are distinguished by the types and degree of concentration of the chemical elements present in their formulation. Among others, phosphor bronze.

In phosphor bronze alloys, in addition to the base raw materials, copper and tin, the element phosphorus is present in concentrations of up to 1%. Although it is used in small quantities, phosphorus acts as an important deoxidizer, increases the hardness of the material and decreases the expansion coefficient of parts produced in phosphor bronze.

Phosphor bronze applications

Among the applications of phosphor bronze, its wide use in the naval, chemical, food, automotive and metal mechanic industries stands out.

In fact it is called phosphor bronze a family of alloys that use the element phosphorus in the composition. Each family alloy has its own classification and applications. Examples:

Phosphor bronze SAE 65 – This is phosphor bronze used mainly in the manufacture of:

  • Crown for worm gears
  • Sliding guides
  • Bearings and bushings for heavy loads
  • Rotors for pumps
  • High pressure valve components
  • Gears
  • Piston rings
  • Taps and components for steam conductors

Phosphor bronze SAE 620 – This type of bronze has perfect properties for the following applications:

  • Sealing rings
  • Condensers and valve components
  • Bearings for heavy loads and moderate rotation
  • Rotors for pumps
  • Gears
  • Crowns for worm gears
  • Piston rings
  • Connections for steam
  • Percussion musical instruments

Phosphor bronze SAE 64 – This formulation is recognized as a perfect bronze for the following applications:

  • Bushings for presses
  • Shoes
  • Slide bushings
  • Stop bushings
  • Rings
  • Hydraulic material
  • Coupling elements

Phosphor bronze SAE 660 – Bronze successfully used for these purposes:

  • Rings production
  • Bearings
  • Bushings
  • Anti-friction components
  • Hydraulic material
  • Coupling elements

Phosphor bronze applications

Phosphorus is a chemical element of mineral origin, being described as a non-metal. It has high reactivity mainly with air, showing a high tendency to oxidize. One of its applications is in the composition of metal alloys.

Phosphorus can be incorporated into nickel, steel and bronze alloys (hence the name phosphor bronze alloys). In them, phosphorus reduces the viscosity of the molten alloy, making the casting process easier and cleaner. It also reduces grain size, resulting in fine-grained alloys.

The main characteristic of phosphor bronze is its high strength and resistance (mechanical, corrosion and abrasion). Other properties complete the set of characteristics that, by themselves, explain the wide applicability of the alloy:

  • Seawater corrosion resistance
  • Durability even under high loads
  • Machinability
  • Weldability
  • Good conduction of heat and electricity
  • Wear resistance
  • Tenacity
  • Great hardness
  • Fine granulation
  • Impact resistance
  • Great energy absorption
  • Low friction coefficient
  • Excellent performance with medium specific loads and at low speed
  • Resistance to sulphurous liquids as in papermaking
  • Castability
