Bronze for bushings
Mercobronze is one of the most traditional Brazilian manufacturers of bronze for bushings. Bronze is a copper-based metal alloy to which tin is mixed and other components may also be added. Bronze alloys are obtained from the innumerable possible combinations among which are bronze for bushings alloys.

Bronze alloy for bushings
Mercobronze produces bronze for bushings using bronze alloys cast in a continuous system. The method offers, as a result, bushings free of porosity, produced on a large scale, with low cost, impeccable finishing and standard quality in all production stages.
To manufacture bronze for bushings with special measures or larger dimensions, impossible to produce in series by the continuous method, Mercobronze uses the efficient technical method of centrifugal casting.
The bronze appropriate for bushings must crucially have the following characteristics:
- Anti-friction capability
- Great castability
- Long service life
- Resistance to corrosive agents
- Mechanical strength
- Machinability
- Castability
- High thermal conductivity
Bronze for bushings in critical applications
To manufacture bronze for bushings in critical applications, the choice of alloy must be made under strict criterion. This is the case of bronze for bushings used in equipment exposed to great efforts, machines that operate in different environments, or that operate continuously, at high speeds and for a long number of hours.
Mercobronze is one of the most traditional Brazilian companies in foundry and frequently meets demands for bronze for bushings in critical applications. Some of the alloys used by our company for this purpose, depending on the requirements of each case, are:
Bronze SAE 65: This bronze alloy has in its composition, in addition to copper and tin, small concentrations of zinc, iron and phosphorus. This formulation results in a bronze of high hardness, excellent resistance to corrosion and shock, in addition to elasticity and thermal conductivity.
Aluminum Bronze: Aluminum bronze alloys have the element aluminum in the composition in proportions ranging from 4% to 13%. They are widely used in the manufacturing of bushings for critical applications, as they have the following characteristics:
- Mechanical strength
- Corrosion resistance
- Resistance to high temperatures
- Good fatigue resistance
- Resistance to oxidation
- Great castability
- Wear resistance
- Ductility
- Weldability
- Machinability
Manganese bronze: Manganese bronze has concentrations of 2.5% to 5% of manganese, in addition to other additional materials. It has high mechanical strength to wear, corrosion and fatigue, withstanding very high static loads that operate at low speed.
Bronze to reduce bushing friction
Bushings are wearing parts designed to absorb and attenuate effects such as those caused by friction, chugging and the different movements performed by components of a main equipment, which the bushings have the role of protection. That is the reason why, when looking for the perfect raw material to manufacture this type of part, one should always look for bronze to reduce bushing friction.
Mercobronze manufactures both the raw material and finished and ready-to-use bronze bushings, using different alloys and technologies. An example of this is the Mercobronze self-lubricating bushings. They are manufactured with graphite or teflon inserts, they are typical examples of bronze applications appropriate for reducing bushing friction.
Bronze with insert of graphite or PTFE: In bronze with graphite or teflon insert, unlike the previous system, the solid lubricant is inserted after the casting of the bushing body. These inserts occupy part of the sliding surface of the wear part and are in the shape of dots (graphite/teflon) on the bronze surface
Both in bushings made of graphite bronze and those produced in bronze with insert, the use of lubricants is not necessary during the service life of the wear part. As a result, material and labor savings are generated for lubrication, in addition to what is most important: less interruption in the activities of the machines. In other words, operating on the production line with bronze to reduce bushing friction is, above all, a productivity and economy factor.
