Brass casting

Mercobronze uses brass casting to produce and commercialize the most different types of materials and parts, meeting orders for serial or specific manufacturing, depending on the customer’s needs.

Brass is a metal alloy similar to bronze, in which copper (66%) is combined with zinc (34%). Both bronze and brass are generically called “copper alloys”.

When other materials are added to brass such as aluminum, tin, lead and arsenic, different types of brass are obtained. Each type is appropriate for certain specific applications by the thousands of engines that use the material as raw material to manufacture products, parts and components.

Brass has a relatively low melting point (between 900ºC and 940ºC, depending on the alloy). This property allows the metal to be forged, cast, rolled and cold drawn relatively easily.

Among the great appreciated properties of brass, the following stand out:

Color and brightness – It has intense brightness and yellowish color, similar to gold.

Malleability – Characteristic that makes brass the preferred alloy for making plates and sheets.

Ductility– Property that allows brass to be transformed into wires.

Conductivity – factor that gives brass excellent conduction of heat and electricity.

Mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion – Some brass alloys withstand to chemically aggressive environments.

Brass casting for industries

The brass casting technique for industries consists in pouring the metal liquid into a mold previously prepared for this purpose. In this way, it is possible to manufacture parts with simple and complex geometry, in an economical way.

The casting process is controlled in such a way that the product does not have bubbles, coarse metal grains, porosity, cracks and other solidification problems.

One of the brass casting processes is the mold casting. In this method, permanent and reusable molds are used, made of metal, called die. The molds are heated and greased with a release solution to then receive the liquid metal, which is poured into the mold by gravity (or gas pressure and vacuum). After the metal solidifies, the mold is opened and the part is removed to receive the finishing.

The die casting process is indicated for the medium serial production of parts. It also has a low rate of material loss and high final quality.

Brass casting parts

There are many products currently made of brass or that have brass components, especially because this metal alloy has many advantages and an excellent value for money.

Brass is a material widely used in decoration and finishing parts, such as drawer handles and doorknobs, for example, due to its brightness and golden color.

When corrosion resistance and low friction are necessary the brass alloy also is a solution, reason why it is used in the manufacture of locks, hinges, gears, bearings, ammunition cartridges, zippers, plumbing, hose couplings, valves, plugs and electrical sockets.

Brass is widely applied in the manufacturing of musical instruments such as trombones, trumpets, horns and tubas. Companies producing items for the fashion industry are another example of an industrial sector that uses brass to manufacture ornaments, costume jewelries and jewelries.

In situations where it is important that sparks are not produced, such as accessories and tools used in environments with flammable or explosive materials, parts made of brass are chosen for their anti-sparking property.

Items made with brass::

  • Condenser tubes
  • Weapons and ammunition cartridges
  • Faucets and valves
  • Padlocks
  • Rivets
