Bronze square billet

One of Mercobronze’s specialties is the manufacturing of bronze square billet, in the appropriate alloy to meet the needs of each company – it may be tensile strength, corrosion resistance, high ductility, malleability, low friction, etc. These properties are achieved, among other factors, by the composition of the alloy.

Mercobronze’s bronze square billet is used both in the manufacturing of parts and components and in its raw form due to the excellence of its characteristics: excellent weldability, resistance to fatigue and corrosion, maintenance of alignment and non-sparking under the action of friction and shock (fundamental point for use in places with flammable components).

Bronze is considered the most reliable of metals for applications where strength and sliding are a central requirement and where inefficiency is not tolerated. This is the case, for example, of its application in the aerospace industry, which uses it to manufacture components, such as bushings and bearings of aircraft landing gear.

In the naval industry, bronze is present in the most sensitive parts of ships, such as propeller hubs and wear rings, basic elements for the navigability and safety of vessels.

In the oil and gas industry, bronze is used in the manufacturing of columns for vertical pumps and seawater lift pumps, whose salinity does not allow the use of metal liable to corrosion. In these cases, the safety factor is also fundamental; and bronze, once again, appears as a solution.

In addition to the properties of the metal itself, another point of great importance concerns the process used in casting parts and materials in bronze. It is the process that will define, for example, the density of the grains and, consequently, the reliability of the material. In addition to relying on an efficient continuous casting method to produce bronze square billet, Mercobronze adopts strict control procedures to guarantee the final quality of the products it manufactures.

Economy and efficiency on the bronze billet in Continuous Casting

Mercobronze, at the beginning of its activities used the traditional methods of die casting and sand casting (with stationary molds) to manufacture bronze billets. As a result of high investment, the company replaced these processes with the efficient and productive continuous production system. The qualitative improvement placed Mercobronze on a technologically level with the largest producers of serial material and bronze parts in the country.

Conventional casting processes (die and sand) are still widely used around the world in the manufacturing of parts with abstract and complex geometry, impossible to produce in a continuous system. In them, the bronze is melted and poured into the mold, as has been done since the beginning of the transformation of metals by man. After cooling and solidifying, the material is removed and subjected to the machining process (deburred and finished) to be finalized. It is a very slow, expensive method, which involves a lot of labor and raw material surplus, in addition to frequently generating a high degree of rework.

Furthermore, pieces with a geometric pattern and symmetrical lines, such as bronze round, square and hexagonal billets, can be produced in scale, through the continuous casting process. In this case, as the nomenclature itself says, it is about uninterrupted, economical manufacturing, with high productivity, low loss and little need for labor.

Manufacturers of machinery and equipment, industries, refineries, plants and several companies of the most different sizes and sectors across the country benefit themselves from the quality of the bronze square billet produced by Mercobronze in a continuous system.
